customisable enterprise systems or not?

Some enterprise IT system vendors say their customers want something that works out of the box, and no hassle.

Other enterprise IT system vendors say their customers want customisable systems, and freedom.

They're both wrong.

Do you want a customisable house?

Wouldn't you rather build from scratch again?

Is it not mostly cheaper, better and faster to build from scratch if you want some serious changes?

Do you pimp your car, or do you buy a new one?

Last time GM had a complete new car concept they started from scratch and Saturn the firm was created.

When Toyota wanted to build a luxury car they chose not to do so within the company, they created Lexus, a new company.

If you really want to compete in earnest you start over, you do not customise. And you definitely do not copy what your competitor is doing.

Thus out-of-the-box is wrong.

Customisable is wrong.

Easy to build from scratch is right.
